Hawala network busted

JAMMU, DEC. 7. The Jammu and Kashmir Police today unearthed a well-knit gang of hawala operators in Kashmir and recovered Rs. 40 lakhs, a satellite telephone, a wireless set and 300 kg of RDX from a top ranking Hizbul Mujahideen. Ten top businessmen of Srinagar have also been arrested for ``being part of the nexus.''
The IGP Kashmir Zone, Mr. K. Rajindra, said police parties fanned out to track down a gang financing militants. Raids were conducted in Srinagar and Baramulla and vehicles checked. A taxi was stopped near Parimpora, on the outskirts of Srinagar, but the driver escaped. His accomplice, Abdur Rashid Lone of Wagub Sopore, divisional commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, was overpowered and Rs. 40 lakhs, a satellite phone were recovered from him. The money was got from a Pakistani militant Shafiqur Rehman, who had escaped on a two-wheeler. In subsequent raids, police recovered 300 kg of RDX and a wireless set from Sopore.
Police also raided the houses and establishments of some top business houses of Srinagar. Sources said that at least 10 persons had been arrested in Baramulla and Srinagar.
`Fidayeen' attack repulsed

Troops of the Rashtriya Rifles shot dead a Lashkar-e-Taiba militant when he tried to sneak into their camp amid firing from two sides by his accomplices at Zainapora in Shopian area of Pulwama district in south Kashmir early today.
Governor's warning
The Jammu and Kashmir Governor, Mr. G.C. Saxena, today warned Pakistan against undertaking any misadventure, asserting that the Indian Army was ready to face any eventuality.
In a speech during the launch of the armed forces Flag Day Fund at the Raj Bhavan here, he praised the security forces for notching spectacular successes against cross-border terrorism. He recalled that the forces have killed 1,800 militants till the end of November this year.
