Farooq hints at tougher law than POTO

NEW DELHI, DEC. 7. The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, today told presspersons on the sidelines of a business conference here that he would introduce a tougher law in the State if the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance (POTO) is not passed in Parliament.

Dr. Farooq Abdullah said the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) did not have the safeguards which POTO had. If POTO is not approved in Parliament, he said, ``then I am going to bring such a tough law in Jammu and Kashmir that you will shake.'' The Chief Minister said he favoured introduction of POTO to contain terrorism despite the possibility of incurring the voters' wrath during the next Assembly elections. ``India must survive, even if I lose the elections,'' he said. - UNI
