Restore Periyar Centre: Jayalalithaa
By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, DEC. 7. Taking strong objection to the demolition of the Periyar Centre by the Delhi Development Authority, the AIADMK general secretary, Ms. Jayalalithaa, today urged the Government of Delhi to help restore the centre.

``It was quite disturbing and painful to learn that the Periyar Centre was subjected to unwarranted demolition by the DDA. I feel that the demolition was carried out with undue haste and could have been totally avoided,'' she said in a statement. She said it was distressing to note that ``such shabby treatment'' was meted out to the centre.

``That this building, housing the first ever such Centre in the National capital, New Delhi, was mutilated beyond repair for alleged minor violations of the building rules is condemnable,'' she said.

``The whole matter has assumed a sinister design because of the involvement of the Janata Party president, Dr. Subramanian Swamy, at whose behest it is said the demolition was ordered. It is is a pity that the government of Delhi acceded to the bidding of a person like Dr. Swamy.''

Ms. Jayalalithaa appealed to the Delhi Government to handle the issue in a responsible way and undo the damage already done.
