Ashok Kumar passes away

MUMBAI, DEC. 10. The doyen of Indian cinema, Mr. Ashok Kumar, who dominated the Hindi celluloid scene with his inimitable acting for over seven decades, passed away today at his residence in Chembur here after a prolonged illness. He was 90 and is survived by his son and two daughters, including actress Ms. Preeti Ganguli.

The eldest of Ganguli brothers, Mr. Ashok Kumar entered the Hindi film industry during the silent era. Before entering films, Mr. Ashok Kumar was a law student.

Apart from being the lead actor in many box-office hits, he also excelled as a producer. He won the lifetime contribution award in 1996.
