Opinion - Letters to the Editor

A vote for peace

Sir, - Despite the People's Alliance playing the chauvinistic card in Sri Lanka, the United National Party has won. It's victory indicates people's desire for peace. Now that the UNP has won it should fulfill its electoral promises - initiate peace talks immediately with the LTTE and lift the economic embargo in the LTTE held areas.

Your special correspondent Ms. Nirupama Subramanian has rightly pointed out in `Rivals thrown together' (Dec. 9) that the UNP's victory is also a mandate for change in the very concept of governance. Instead of playing their age-old games of rivalry, Ms. Kumaratunga and Mr. Wickremasinghe should work together to find an early solution to the ethnic issue.

Durga,

Vellore, (T.N.)
