Call for ceasefire

Sir, - Your editorial `PWG's discredited means' (Dec. 3) describes the devastating acts unleashed by the PWG on the private properties owned by the family members of the Chief Minister, Mr. Chandrababu Naidu, and the Union Minister of State, Mr. U.V.Krishnam Raju. The PWG's game plan is to embarrass those in power. The persistent pleas made by Mr. Naidu to shun violence were simply ignored by the naxals, who, unfortunately, are yet to realise that societal reforms do not flow from the barrel of the gun.

While the Janashakti group had the audacity to kidnap a close relative of a Union Minister, the PWG went a step further killing a circle inspector in a court in Visakhapatnam district. `The brutal and oppressive manoeuvers of the State police against naxalite groups in recent years', (Oct. 29) as you rightly opined, seem to have allowed no let-up thereby blotting their image. Under the shadow of the gun, neither `janmabhoomi', nor `administration to the people's doorsteps' has brought about the desired regional development. Mr. Naidu's fears that the naxal attacks would affect the pace of industrial development of the State is not unfounded. Peeved at the large-scale surrenders, the PWG seems to pursue the hidden agenda of depriving the youth of any possible employment opportunities, which makes it easy to win them over to the path of violence out of frustration. Both sides should call for a ceasefire and arrive at a peaceful settlement.

B.V. Kumar,

Nellore (A.P.)
