Tehri residents begin fast

DEHRADUN, DEC. 11. Scores of residents of Tehri town today began a fast protesting the Government's ``indifference'' towards the threat of their displacement by the ongoing construction of the controversial hydro-project and demanding extension of civic amenities till completion of rehabilitation.

The fast began amid seepage of water from closed special tunnels of the 2400 MW Tehri dam following a drizzle raising the spectre of flooding from Bhagirathi river in the event of heavy rains.

If heavy rains set in, there is apprehension among the inhabitants of Tehri that rising water level of Bhagirathi would submerge large areas of the town.
