Panel to examine Fernandes first
By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI, DEC. 11. The Justice Venkataswami Commission today ruled out any change in the order of examination of witnesses and said the Defence Minister, Mr. George Fernandes, would be examined as the first witness after the completion of evidence adduced on behalf of the Government.

The Commission reiterated its earlier direction that the witnesses would be examined in the chronological order as they figured in the 4 1/2 hour Tehelka tapes.

However, an exception had been made in the case of Mr. Fernandes to examine him as the first person among Sec. 8 B notices in view of his specific request to that effect ``which the Commission considers reasonable in view of the peculiar circumstances of the case''.

The Commission also made it clear that `Operation West End' would be taken up per se as a transaction, apart from the motives of Tehelka.com as well as the means employed by them and the reliability of transcripts to begin with.
