Encounters in Kashmir

SRINAGAR DEC. 15. Six civilian persons, including a girl, were killed in an exchange of fire between militants and security forces at three different places in Kashmir today. Four militants, a soldier and a policeman were also killed.

Militants hiding in a house in Krankshivan near Sopore opened fire on security forces when the house was cordoned off this morning. This led to an encounter and in the crossfire a woman and an 8-year-old girl got killed. Four militants and a soldier were also killed in the gunfight.

In Tral township of South Kashmir, militants shot dead a special police official, Mr. Mohammad Akbar. The police retaliated in which two civilians were killed and nine others sustained bullet injuries. In a similar incident in Shopian, militants opened fire on a mini bus in which a group of pro- government Ikhwan militants was travelling. They returned the fired and killed one person.

Militants gunned down the block president of the ruling National Conference in Klaroos Kupwara.
