AI hostesses can fly up to 58: SC

NEW DELHI, DEC. 15. The Supreme Court has permitted Air India air hostesses to fly up to the age of 58 but stayed the Bombay High Court order directing the airliner to treat them equal with male flight stewards in respect of promotional benefits.

The Bombay High Court judgment allowing air hostesses to continue in flying service till the age of 58 and making them eligible for equal promotional benefits, was challenged in the Apex Court by the Cabin Crew Association (CCA), represented wholly by male members.

The CCA had challenged the judgment on the ground that male members had been considered superior for the job of this nature and they had been enjoying the superiority for long.

The High Court in its ruling last year had said that such a discrimination against air hostesses merely on gender basis was violative of the Constitution treating all citizens equal without any discrimination on the basis of sex, religion, caste and race.

The High Court had struck down a government notification which fixed the flying age limit for air hostesses at 45 and required them to work under the supervision of male crew even if the supervisory male officer was junior to them in service.
