Israel pulls out of Gaza town
- AFP, Reuters
JERUSALEM, DEC. 15. Israel said on Saturday it had begun to withdraw its troops from a Palestinian-ruled town in northern Gaza that it entered on Friday night as part of a sweep for militants responsible for attacks on Israelis.
``We have begun leaving Beit Hanoun,'' an Israeli army spokeswoman said. There was no immediate confirmation from Palestinian witnesses or officials that the withdrawal had begun.
About 30 tanks stormed into the town after Israeli warplanes bombed the Palestinian leader, Mr. Yasser Arafat's compound in Gaza city for a third straight night. Hundreds of Palestinian youths hurled stones at the tanks in defiance of the intense Israeli military and political onslaught.
The U.S. today used its veto power to kill a West Asia resolution urging monitors in the West Bank and Gaza on grounds it was unbalanced towards Israel and would not promote the peace process.
