March and yatras
Sir, - Kudos to Mr. Harish Khare for his `From Ayodhya to Dandi' (Dec. 12). Mr. L.K. Advani's rath yatra has meagre qualification to be compared to the great Dandi march led by Mahatma Gandhi.
Gandhiji had organised the march against the British rulers' iniquitous salt tax imposed on the Indian masses. He had covered the length by foot, attracting several people, while Mr. Advani's yatra was on a beautifully decorated chariot.
The masses who participated in the Dandi march consisted of people from all sections, irrespective of caste, creed and religion, whereas Mr. Advani's attracted only a section of Hindus and it helped to create visceral hatred in them against the Muslims.
Gandhiji was struggling against the British to achieve freedom through non-violence while Mr. Advani was leading his yatra to create division among the people and thus to reach the corridors of power.
Gandhiji's ideologies were all to consecrate a peaceful, contended, secular and democratic `Ramrajya' after freedom, while Mr. Advani's are to establish `Hindu rashtra' through violent methods.
While Gandhiji led the struggle against foreigners, Mr. Advani is leading his party against the sacred Indian cultural heritage.
