Diplomatic battle
Sir, - Apropos the news analysis `Diplomacy precedes military response' by Mr. C. Raja Mohan (Dec. 15), while there can be no doubt that the attacks on the Parliament House are the handiwork of Islamic fundamentalist organisations, the most desirable for our political leadership of all hues would be to demonstrate national solidarity at this moment of grave democratic peril. Now is also the time for us to garner maximum diplomatic support for our fight against cross-border terrorism rather than following a pro-active policy. We must convince the world, by sharing with them the technical information gathered on the recent terrorist attacks, and force Pakistan, under various U.N. resolutions, to stop the activities of terrorist groups on its soil and also squeeze all their assets.
Only after creating such a diplomatic atmosphere can we convince the major countries that Indian restraint alone will not establish peace in the region. Al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden's open targeting of India for terrorist attack has explicit Pakistani support. If Pakistan keeps on questioning the evidence of their involvement in terrorist acts in India or attributes motives to India, it is for the major powers of the world to make it see the reason and force it to act in a rational way. India's patience may also run out.
