Old Cottonians' reunion tomorrow
By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, DEC. 20. The Old Cottonians' Association will launch its 75th anniversary celebrations on Saturday with a week-long programme of sports, the AGM, and the Reunion Dinner.

The Bishop Cotton School was formally opened in 1865 by Rev. Samuel Thomas Pettigrew, then chaplain of St. Mark's Church and was a co-education school till 1911 when the girl's school was started across the road.

Rev. A.E.Scipio, warden of the school from 1924 to 1929, mooted the idea of forming the Old Boys' Association and the first meeting was held on December 26, 1927. By clubbing the Old Cottonians Day, following the commemoration service of St. Peter's Day held on June 29 every year, as St. Peterstide, many old Cottonians were able to attend the event. For the past 75 years, this has become a tradition with every old Cottonian making the effort to join the festivities and the reunion.

Over the years, the association has been a vital link between the old boys and the school and has become a symbiotic relationship. Though autonomous in its functioning, the association's members are deeply sensitive to the needs of the school and contribute to the school by moral and material support. It presented the school with a swimming pool and filtration plant way back in 1937 and a Hammond Organ for the school chapel, which is still in use.

The Old Cottonians' Association now has chapters in England, Australia, Canada, and the US and representatives in all Indian cities. Among the old boys are Mr. Ruddi Mody, Dr. Raja Ramanna, Gen. K.S.Thimmaya, the Infosys COO, Mr. Nandan Nilekani, the film star, Mr. Feroz Khan, and the former LIC Chairman, Mr. Jacob Matthan.

The Platinum Jubilee celebrations will include golf and snooker tournaments, cricket and basketball matches with present students and the reunion. For details contact the honorary secretary of the association, Mr. Nikhil Tivari, on phone 2228003. email oldcottonians@vsnl.net.
