Southern States - Karnataka-Bangalore

`Make City an art and culture capital'
By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, DEC. 20. The State Government was in the process of finalising guidelines for giving a ``deemed university'' status to the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat here and a decision on this would be taken shortly, the Chief Minister, Mr. S.M.Krishna, said here on Thursday.

He was replying to a request by Ms. Sudha Reddy, trustee of the parishat, in this regard at the inauguration of the National Artists' Camp 2001 organised by it.

On the grant of land by the Government for setting up a fine arts college in Yelahanka by the chitrakala parishat, Mr. Krishna said the Deputy Commissioner was looking into the matter and the Government would take action based on the recommendations of the Deputy Commissioner.

Bangalore had established itself as the ``knowledge capital'' of the country and efforts should be made to convert it into an ``art and culture'' capital also. The City was close to becoming a ``kala'' destination, Mr. Krishna said and urged the corporate sector to help in organising more such art camps and cultural programmes. He lauded the parishat for its efforts to promote art and artists in the State.

Twenty-three artists from India and abroad are participating in the seven-day camp where they will interact with students of fine arts and art critics.

Prof. B.K.Chandrashekar, Minister of State for Information Technology, Ms. Rani Satish, Minister of State for Kannada and Culture, Mr. H.K.Kejriwal and Mr. D.K.Chowta, vice-presidents of the parishat, Mr. Shambhu Chowdhary, renowned artist, and Mr. Nanjunda Rao, general secretary of the parishat, were present on the occasion.
