Record entries for National
By Manuel Aaron
CHENNAI, DEC. 22. A record number of 409 children are participating in the 15th Velammal National under-7 and under-9 boys & girls chess championship which begins on Sunday at the Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School. Last year at Ahmedabad, the total was 275.
As expected the number of entries in the boys' events is nearly double that of girls. At the time of going to press the numbers are: under-7 boys: 111; under-7 girls: 61; Under-9 boys: 154; Under-9 girls: 83.
The prize pool is Rs 66,800 with 10 cash prizes in each of the four categories. The championship will be a 11-round Swiss system tournament with all pairings done on computers. December 27 will be a free day when the children will be taken out for sightseeing.
Last year at Ahmedabad, the Andhra players took the bulk of the medals on offer. This year could be different as the Tamil Nadu boys are sharp, have good theoretical understanding and they will be playing on home ground.
In the under-9, S. Nitin, M. Muthualagappan and S.P. Sethuraman are good prospects from Tamil Nadu. Likewise, in the under-7, N. Srinath should do well.
