Brilliant Vinod bags triple jump gold
By Our Sports Reporter

Kerala University's P.J.Vinod who won the men's triple jump gold in the All-India varsities athletic meet at Tenhipalam on Monday.

TENHIPALAM, DEC 31. Just one hop, step and jump was enough to shut out the field. Kerala University's P.J.Vinod took a short break from the decathlon, his main event, and returned with a sparkling triple jump gold on the penultimate day of the 62nd all-India inter-university athletic championships at the Calicut University Stadium here on Monday.

The gruelling decathlon and the punishing triple jump may not make an ideal combination. And this evening, while Vinod was busy with the multi-eventer's high jump, the call for triple jump came. And for once, the first year MA student of Thiruvananthapuram's University College appeared to have dipped his fingers into too many pie here. He appeared headed for trouble.

But the brilliant athlete that he is, the tall Vinod put his all in his opening leap and came up with a stunner. The personal-best 15.64 m effort was enough to bring him his maiden all-India varsities triple jump title even while conserving his energy for the ten-eventer. ``That was unexpected,'' said Vinod.

The big leap perked him up nicely. He was on a new high when he returned to the decathlon, and to the high jump pit, and soared to a life-best 1.83 m. And after a fantastic first day in the multi-eventer, Vinod led the points table with 3,585 points. Maharshi Dayanand University's Jora Singh, the National Games silver medallist and the favourite here, was second

261 points after the five events.

Three records fell today, but well ... nothing is official. With the organisers yet to receive the list of records from the headquarters, the AIU, the records and record-holders were kept waiting for yet another day.

Very unfortunate really. For there were some outstanding performances, by Charan Singh University's Babita Chaudhary in the women's 400 m hurdles and by the Kerala men and host Calicut women sprint relay teams on an action-packed fourth day. All three broke the `records' given in the official booklet.

The 22-year-old Babita won the low hurdles silver in the Chennai Open Nationals recently and clocked her personal-best 59.6 seconds today. The host Calicut University team (Deepthi Jose, P.S.Ganamol, Anu Joseph and M.V.Manju) took the women's 100 m relay gold after the favourite Mahatma Gandhi University's

K.A.Shamlamol and K.M.Greeshma, the 100 m champion here, messed up their baton exchange and then collided with each other in the resultant confusion.

Kerala University (A.K.Shani, M.S.Vinu, Rijo Kuriakose, M.G. Ratheesh), without a single 100 m medallist, picked the men's relay gold while host Calicut lost crucial points with a poor baton exchange.

However, after taking five golds today, Calicut made considerable progress in the points table. Sinimol Paulose, who completed a double by winning the women's 1,500 m, had a big hand in the host's grand march.

Last year's overall champion Mahatma Gandhi University had a very disappointing day and failed to pick a single gold.

There was off-the-field action too, with students from a few universities clashing with the locals here. The incident, though it had nothing to do with the competition here, appeared to go out of hand but thankfully, the parties reached out a settlement this evening.
