By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, JAN. 1. The Centre has announced a number of measures to promote training and research in the field of biotechnology in a bid to address the growing need for manpower in pharma and other related sectors.
A salient feature of the new initiatives is the introduction of a separate module on biotechnology in school curriculum. The Department of Biotechnology will provide the outline for the module.
In addition, biotechnology will be integrated in the curriculum of all under-graduate programmes and IITs, IISc, Bangalore, IIIT, Allahabad, IITM, Gwalior, and some select Regional Engineering Colleges will be given help to set up full-fledged departments of biotechnology, with under-graduate, post- graduate and doctoral programmes.
Announcing this, an official spokesperson said the system of admission in engineering programmes, particularly in disciplines like biotechnology, biochemical engineering and chemical engineering, would be reviewed and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) would set up an experts committee to bring about a re-orientation in pharmacy education.
