STRASBOURG: An explosion here in the early hours of Tuesday left 12 people injured, one seriously, firefighters said. The cause of the blast, which occurred at 0745 IST, as new year's celebrations were winding down, was not immediately known. ``It was an evening of celebration, with lots of people around,'' said a local mayor's office worker, who lives nearby. ``There was a loud explosion, my husband went down to take a look, there were injuries. It's terrible''. Elsewhere in the Strasbourg area, 27 vehicles were set alight and three police officers injured by gunshot. There has been trouble during new year celebrations in Strasbourg for several years. (In the picture, policemen inspect a damaged building.)
