All eyes on Chandrahasa
HYDERABAD, JAN. 1. Koneru Chandrahasa, younger sister of World junior champion, is all set to test her mastery on the 64-squares when she takes part in the sixth Global Trust Bank All India FIDE- rated chess tournament which begins at Arya Vysya Abhydaya Sangam (Secunderabad) from tomorrow, according to the organisers.
Chandrahasa, who recently won the State championship to qualify for the National sub-junior championshpi but had to skip due to her examination schedule, is taking up the sport with all seriousness of late according to her more famous sister, Humpy.
``Initially, she started playing for the sake of fun but now she is determined to make a mark for herself,'' Humpy told The Hindu. With father-cum-coach Koneru Ashok accompanying her for this event, Chandrahasa, playing her first All India tournament of this level, can be the focus of attention for Andhra alongwith the seasoned campaigner and IM-elect P.D.S. Girinath.
Incidentally, this highly talented player who never got his due, will be making a comeback of sorts after that tragedy in which five youngsters including two Asian under-10 champions - Mekhala Abhinav, Dasari Minu - died in a road accident a few months ago when they were on they way to Puri from Bhubaneshwar with Girinath heading the contingent as coach. A tragedy which shook the morale of Girinath and almost stopped him from playing chess again.
About 400 entries had already been confirmed for this annual edition. Twenty International Masters including the familiar names like G.B. Prakash, Jayant Gokhale, Anup Deshmukh, Verghese Koshy, Ravi Hegde, Shankar Roy, Rahul Shetty, Vishal Sareen, S. Kidambi, Suvrajit Saha, T.S. Ravi will be in the fray. Some of the highly talented youngsters and national age group champions include Vijay Kirthi, Ramyakrishna, Manogna, Sandeep, Raviteja and Madhu Kiran.
Mr. G.R. Reddy, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Hyderabad, will inaugurate.
