MGU celebrates with a hat-trick
By Our Sports Reporter
TENHIPALAM, JAN 1. They were just letting off steam. Unwinding in fact. After all the penultimate day shivers, the Mahatma Gandhi University athletes did some wild dancing at the Calicut University Stadium here on Tuesday evening. For the Kottayam team had just completed a hat-trick of triumphs in the all-India inter-university athletic championships.
Surprisingly, for a side which failed to win a single gold yesterday, MGU's overall title came with a lot to spare, its final score being 70 points to Calicut University's 55. Guru Nanak Dev (Amritsar, 44) was third.
``This could be our biggest victory in the history of the championship,'' said the jubilant MGU coach P. V. Velsy.
MGU, with its stars coming from Alphonsa and Assumption colleges, also won the women's team trophy for the tenth successive time while Maharshi Dayanand University (Rohtak) lifted the men's title. And to complete the celebration, the Kottayam team's international P. S. Primesh (men) and K. A. Shamlamol (women) won the individual honours.
Clearly, two splendid wins in the mile relays did the trick and MGU left its rivals far behind in the race for the overall honours. With four top girls from Alphonsa College (Pala), the Kottayam side's victory in the women's 1600 m relay was expected, but not the men's title despite the presence of Primesh.
In fact, MGU was running third midway through the third lap but K. T. Tony, who finished the penultimate leg splendidly, and a powerful last lap by Primesh gave the MGU men a deserving victory.
There were some tight finishes in the individual events too. And in the decathlon which decides the meet's `strongest athlete', National Games silver medallist Jora Singh's late charge helped him defeat Kerala's P. J. Vinod.
``The second day events are my favourite ones. It will be tough for Vinod today. The title is mine,'' said Jora Singh, a former kabaddi international, early this morning. Vinod had held the lead after the first five events yesterday but Jora's big throws with the discus and javelin changed the scene today.
For Assumption College's Shamlamol, the women's heptathlon title was her second gold in this meet. She had won the 100 m hurdles crown as the long jump silver earlier. Also completing a double was Charan Singh University's Babita Chaudhary, who took up athletics just three years ago. A powerful run saw the Ghaziabad MMH College student add the 200 m gold to the 400 m hurdles she had taken yesterday.
