Harikrishna keeps joint lead
HASTINGS (UK), JAN. 1. India's youngest ever grandmaster Pendyala Harikrishna remained in joint lead after an easy draw with GM Alexei Barsov of Uzbekistan in the third round of the premier tournament of the Hastings International chess congress here.
GM Joe Gallagher of Switzerland joined four overnight leaders with an emphatic victory over GM Peter Wells of England on an otherwise draw-marred day that witnessed just the one decisive result.
Second-seed GM Krishnan Sasikiran drew his third successive game in the tournament with GM Petr Kiriakov of Russia while International Master Irina Krush, the lone woman participant, opened her account with a hard-fought draw with GM Mark Hebden of England.
Top-seed GM Zhang Zhong failed to score the full point yet again and was involved in a 32-move draw with Im Pert Nicholas of England.
In the challengers event, being organised simultaneously, the lead positions remained unchanged, as draws were the order of the day on top boards here too. Top-seed GM Vitaly Tsheshkovski of Russia and Im Aimen Rizouk of Algeria played out a draw on the top board and shared the lead jointly with 3.5 points from four games.
GM Dibyendu Barua and ims D.V. Prasad and P. Konguvel shared the third spot alongwith Keith Arkell (Eng), Sergei Azarov (Blr), Emanuel berg (Eng), Alexander Cherniaev (Rus), Glenn Flear (Eng), Daniel Gormally (Eng), Mas Hafizulhelmi (Mal), Colin Mcnab (Sco), James Plaskett (Eng), John Shaw (Sco), Amon Simutowe (Zam), and Zvonko Stanojoski (Ger) with 3 points each in their kitty.
After drawing his last two games, Barua came back into reckoning as he defeated compatriot Im Neeraj Kumar Mishra in a Sicilian defence game with white pieces while Prasad scored his third successive victory, overcoming Udi Weisbuch of Israel.
GM Pravin Thipsay struggled with his form yet again and was held to a draw by lowly rated Roussel-Roozmon of Canada while Konguvel drew with Daniel Gormally.
