Punishable 'hostility'
Sir, - This refers to your Editorial ``Another legal victory'' (Dec. 28). You have observed that ``the retrial was characterised by the extraordinary spectacle of a string of prosecution witnesses turning hostile after Ms. Jayalalithaa became Chief Minister.''
It is condemnable that such u-turns are not only made by the ill-read but also by high-ranking officers, saying they were originally coerced or threatened to give a statement.
By the same token, it can be argued that they have turned hostile now under pressure from the powers that be. Turning hostile without any justification should be made punishable.

Sir, - The reversal of verdicts in the criminal cases against Ms. Jayalalithaa gives a general impression that the cases were either foisted deliberately on her or the prosecution did not present them with substantial evidence.
Legal experts must do a soul-searching on how to revamp the judiciary if the inefficacy of prosecution results in such failings.
