Musharraf reviews defence preparedness
By B. Muralidhar Reddy
ISLAMABAD, JAN. 2. The Pakistan President, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, held two high-level meetings here today to review the defence preparedness as well as the law and order situation in the country in the wake of the ongoing crackdown against hardline Islamic militant groups. He met senior army commanders and service chiefs in Rawalpindi to discuss the military preparedness and the contingency plans in view of the tension on the Indo-Pak. border.
He was given a ``comprehensive'' briefing by the three service chiefs on the threat being posed to Pakistan in light of the ``unprecedented Indian military build-up'', a statement said.
Gen. Musharraf also held a high-level meeting with law and order officials, attended by his Cabinet colleagues, Provincial Governors and police chiefs.
It reviewed the steps being taken to curb sectarian extremism and modernisation of Islamic seminaries, called madrasas, some considered to be the ``jehad'' factories.
