Hewitt runs hot despite temperature

PERTH, JAN. 2. Australia's World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt shrugged off a fever to inspire his country to a dramatic victory over a gallant Argentina in a crucial Hopman Cup tennis tie at Burswood Dome here on Wednesday.

Hewitt gave Australia the edge after it was trailing 0-1 after Alicia Molik went down to Paola Suarez in the women's singles, losing 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, 4-6. But Hewitt had little trouble crushing Argentina's Mariano Zabaleta, 23, who is ranked 59th, 6-3, 6-4.

This levelled the tie at 1-1 before Hewitt starred as Australia fought back from a disastrous start to take the deciding mixed doubles 5-7, 6-3 7-6 (10-7).

The doubles third set was decided by the super- tiebreaker system, with victory going to the first team to reach 10 points.

Spaniards roll Swiss out

Spain's former world no.1 Arantxa Sanchez- Vicario and 19-year-old partner Tommy Robredo thrashed Switzerland 3-0, pushing Spain closer to the final here tonight. Sanchez-Vicario, now an 18th-ranked 30-year-old, crushed Miroslava Vavrinec, 6-2, 6-0. Then Robredo brushed aside 20-year- old Roger Federer in the men's singles 7-6 (9/7) 6-2. The Spaniards then teamed up to trounce their opponents 6-2, 6-3 in the mixed doubles to complete their second clean sweep in two days. They hammered Argentina 3-0 on Sunday.

The results: Australia bt Argentina 3-0. Lleyton Hewitt bt Mariano Zabaleta 6-3, 6-4; Paola Suarez bt Alicia Molik 7-6 (7-1), 3-6, 6-4; Hewitt/Molik bt Zabaleta/Suarez 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (10-7).

Spain bt Switzerland 3-0. Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario bt Miroslava Vavrinec, 6-2, 6-0; Tommy Robredo bt Roger Federer 7-6 (9-7) 6-2; Sanchez-Vicario/Robredo bt Vavrinec/Federer 6-2, 6-3.
