Bank strike today
KOLKATA, JAN. 3. Banking operations in the country are likely to be hit tomorrow during a one-day nation-wide strike called by the All-India Bank Employees' Association (AIBEA).
The strike is against the treatment of employees by the Standard and Chartered Bank management. Normal business at leading stock markets, whose operations depend a great deal on banks after the introduction of the on-line trading system, is also likely to be affected.
``Stanchart management is trying to transfer employees beyond linguistic areas, which is not permitted under the Shastri award. This is a dangerous trend and if not opposed will affect employees of the entire banking industry,'' the AIBEA general secretary, Tarakeswar Chakraborty, said.
The bank transferred a large number of its employees, including women, from Kolkata to Chennai and Delhi. The transfer, he claimed, was not on genuine grounds and was to harass employees who did not opt for the voluntary retirement scheme introduced recently.
