Patil guides CCI to title win
By Our Special Correspondent
MUMBAI, JAN. 3. Cricket Club of India (CCI) found the value of Sandeep Patil in no uncertain terms. The CCI President Mr. Raj Singh Dungarpur likened Patil's performance to his book Sandy Storm. Turning out in his first match,Patil first showed his knack of taking wickets and afterwards wielded his willow like a champion batsman.
He took three wickets when the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), London, seemed set to make a big total in its 45 overs and then made an unbeaten 65-ball 67 for CCI to win the `Spirit of Cricket Festival' 3-Club limited-overs tournament at the Brabourne Stadium on Thursday.
Patil, coming into bat at No. 4 after the fall of skipper Sanjay Manjrekar, was involved in three good partnerships; 42 with Kirti Azad for the fifth; 40 with Kiran More for the sixth and an unbroken 35 with Raju Kulkarni for the eighth.
When it appeared that CCI was cruising in pursuit of the target of 227, MCC skipper Mike Gatting struck removing Azad. Then former Australian fast-medium bowler, Tony Doemaide - he is on the MCC staff looking after the Club's cricket activities - dismissed Kiran More and Suru Nayak of successive deliveries.
At 194 for seven, there was enough anxiety and suspense in the dressing room and on the field. But Raju Kulkarni smashed Dodemaide for two brilliant fours and set the tempo for a exciting three-wicket win for the Churchgate based Club.
Former India captain G.S. Ramchand, who was the adjudicator named Patil `Man of the Match', while Polly Umrigar named Yashpal Sharma `Man of the series'. The CCI captain Manjrekar received the trophy from Lord Swaraj Paul, while Mike Gatting received his from the heir to the Sultan of Oman. Mr. Raj Singh announced a cash award of Rs. 10,000 each to the eleven who played the final for the Club.
The scores: MCC (London) 226 for nine in 45 overs (L. Potter 22, David Ward 82, T. Dodemaide 26, Paul Bedford 32, Michael Jeh 27 not out, S. Patil three for 42) lost to CCI (Mumbai) 229 for seven in 43. overs (S. Patil 67 not out, S. Ankola 44, K. Azad 22, R. Kulkarni not out 18).
