Narrow win for Hyderabad
By Our Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM, JAN. 3. Hyderabad squeaked past Andhra by a margin of two wickets in a match that had all the ingredients of a one-day contest in the K.S. Subbaiah Pillai trophy tournament at the Railway Stadium here on Thursday.

Hyderabad looked like reaching the target of 266 runs without much difficulty after D. Vinay Kumar (83, 6 x 1, 4 x 6, 103b) put on 77 runs for the second wicket with opener Nandakishore (48, 4 x 4, 60b), 61 for the fourth wicket with Anirudh Singh (33, 36b, 4 x 2) and 37 for the fifth wicket with Rohit Shabariwal (28, 29b, 6 x 2) before.

Y. Venugopala Rao, who earlier slammed 86 (107b, 4 x 8) and put on a century stand with L. N. Prasad Reddy (51, 104b, 4 x 2) for the second wicket, suddenly pushed Hyderabad onto the backfoot, removing Anirudh Singh, holding Shabariwal on the long on, trapping Vijay Kumar in front and sending back Shivaji Yadav with a splendid return catch picking up the ball about one foot from the ground by diving to his right. Hyderabad was down at six for 233 in the 43rd over.

It needed 25 runs off the last three overs and during that precarious situation, Vishnuvardhan rose to become Hyderabad's saviour. He hit a six off Shahabuddin followed by a four in the 48th over and took a four off Venu and Hyderabad gained 10 runs from that over, which also saw Vishnuvardhan diving well to reach the crease to avoid a run out.

Hyderabad needed four runs off the last four balls of the last over bowled by Shahabuddin. But misfielding by R. V. Ch. Prasad at long on saw Hyderabad romping home by two wickets with three balls to spare.

Earlier, Andhra after electing to bat first was tied down by Hyderabad initially through good fielding.
