More arrests in Pak.
By B.Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD, JAN. 5. Continuing the crackdown on jehadi outfits and activists for the fourth consecutive day, the Pakistan Government is believed to have arrested dozens of cadres of some of the prominent militant outfits in different parts of the country.

The Pakistan Interior Ministry has confirmed arrest of 100 persons of sectarian and extremist outfits, including office-bearers, in the Punjab province alone.

Local media reports suggest that more than 300 activists and office-bearers of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad, Sunni Tehreek, Sipah-e-Sahaba, Tehreek-e-Jafria and Jamiat Ulemai Islam have been arrested from rural Sindh and Karachi.

Various offices of the LeT and the JeM have been sealed in rural Sindh. Most of the arrests were made from Hyderabad, Mirpur Khas, Nawabshah, Tandu Adam, Jacobabad, Tandu Allahyar, Jamshoro, Kotri, Badin and Thatha districts of Sindh.

In Karachi, police raided some of the religious seminaries in Sir Syed Town and arrested a number of activists belonging to the above-mentioned outfits.

In Mailsi district, police arrested the JeM chief of the district, Amir Muhammad Viqar, and a number of Sipah-e-Sahaba activists.

In Kot Addu and Bhawalpur, police arrested six active members of different religious organisations. Divisional officers of all the four provinces have reportedly been provided a list of extremist elements.

Police also launched a midnight operation against the Jamat Ulema Islami workers all over the country and arrested a number of office-bearers of the organisation.

Religious seminaries and mosques have also not been spared. Reports said that a joint team of police, the CID, Crime Branch, CIA and Special Branch raided offices of Jehadi outfits in the city and arrested 245 persons, including two Imams.

These arrests were made in accordance with the list provided by the Interior Department, which included names of 490 persons.

Most of the workers of Jehadi and sectarian outfits have gone underground due to the ongoing police operation, reports said. The Interior Ministry will issue a formal notification banning Sipah-e-Sahaba in a couple of days.

Before September 11, the Musharraf Government had banned two extremist sectarian outfits and placed the SSP on watch list.
