Sasikiran, Harikrishna in lead

HASTINGS (U.K.), JAN. 5. Grandmaster K. Sasikiran scored a hard-fought victory in 39 moves over GM Joe Gallagher of Switzerland to join compatriot GM P. Harikrishna in the lead after the seventh round of the premier event of the 77th Hastings international chess congress here. Both Sasikiran and Harikrishna have five points each from seven games.

Stanojoski ahead

In the Challengers tournament, IM Zvonko Stanojoski of Macedonia shot into the lead with a victory over IM John Shaw of Scotland. Indian GMs, Dibyendu Barua and Pravin Thipsay, IM Lanka Ravi and Woman Grandmaster S. Vijayalakshmi were in the next group of 10 players with 5.5 points, while IM D.V. Prasad and IWM Bhagyashree Thipsay were on five each.

The results (Premier event, seventh round): Joe Gallagher (3.5, Sui) lost to K. Sasikiran (5); Nicholas Pert (3.5, Eng) drew with P. Harikrishna (5); Peter Wells (1.5, Eng) lost to Alexei Barsov (4, Uzb); Irian Krush (1, U.S.) lost to Zhang Zhong (4, Chn); Mark Hebden (3.5, Eng) bt Petr Kiriakov (3.5, Rus).
