U.S. eases curbs on sale of supercomputers
By Kesava Menon
MANAMA (Bahrain), JAN. 6. The U.S. administration has reportedly eased restrictions on the sale of supercomputers to India and a few other countries. Today's report in the Ha'aretz focussed on the prospects of Israel buying these computers with the restrictions having been eased with respect to it, but the report also said India, Pakistan, Russia and China were the other countries on which the restrictions had been eased.
Israel and the other countries would be able to buy the computers, which have the capability of performing rapid theoretical operations, without obtaining special acquisition permits. Computers that function at a rate of 190,000 MTOPS (millions of theoretical operations per second) can now be bought under the new arrangement. Israeli officials had welcomed the U.S. decision, the report said.
The restrictions on Iran, Libya, North Korea, Cuba, Sudan and Syria would continue to apply.
