Sandeepan among leaders

HYDERABAD, JAN. 6. IM Sandeepan Chanda (7 pts.) shared the lead with eight others at the end of the eighth round in the sixth GTB all-India FIDE-rated chess tournament held at Arya Vysya Abhyudaya Bhavan here on Sunday.

The eight others who joined Sandeepan are Aravind Shastry, Satyapragyan, B.T. Muralikrishna, C. Natarajan, Roktim Bandopadhyaya, Yogesh Gore, K. Ratnakaran and Somak Palit. Fourteen others are closely following the leaders with 6.5 points each.

On the top board, IM Jayant Gokhale, opting for Reti Opening against IM Sandeepan Chanda equalised the position in the 20th move and surprisingly both of them agreed for a draw on the 23rd move.

On the third board, Maria Arul of Tamil Nadu employed Rossolimo Attack against Sicilian Defence of IM Suvrajit Saha

of West Bengal and they also settled for a draw after just 14 moves.

In an upset in the eighth round, R.R. Laxman (6.5) outwitted GM-elect and defending champion G.B. Prakash (5.5). National under-25 champion Satyapragyan scored a facile win over seasoned campaigner R. Balasubramanian of ICF after the latter opted for Pirc Defence. Balasubramanian slipped into time pressure after some weak moves to lose the contest.
