Musharraf's steps
Sir, - This has reference to the article `Peace is the only option' by Kalpana Sharma and Ayesha Khan (Jan. 7). The writers' appeal for peace is understandable and laudable. But some of their arguments are not based on facts.
The U.S. had no option but to do what it did and achieved in Afghanistan. However, the sufferings of the people should be worrying it; India is pleased with the new regime in Afghanistan because it is friendly with us unlike the Taliban which antagonised the entire world; The BJP and its allies are not leading the country into war. It is our country which has been forced to think about it. The Pakistan-sponsored cross- border terrorism has exceeded all limits. It is Pakistan which should pave the way for peace with India. The Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, seems to understand this. He has taken some actions against some jehadi elements there but they are not enough. If he does what is rightly demanded by India and his own ally the U.S. a war can be avoided and tension eased.
There is no alternative to continuing the war against terrorism.
