A warm gesture
Sir, - The handshake by the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, with the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, was a good gesture and Mr. Vajpayee's call to Pakistan to stop its support to terrorist activities in India, is welcome. By asking for action on terrorist organisations, India has made it clear that no bilateral talks can be held with Pakistan until it acts positively.
The time has come for Gen. Musharraf to take action in order to defuse tension between the two countries. He has to prove that his administration is sincere in improving Indo-Pak relations. India does not want another summit which will not yield any results and Gen. Musharraf should understand that the patience of the Indian people is fast running out. Instead the General should try to avoid a situation which rules out scope for bilateral talks between the countries.
Babur Rayyan,
Aligarh
