`Denial of ticket to YC leader a mistake'
By Our Staff Reporter
KARIMNAGAR, JAN. 10. The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president, M. Satyanarayana Rao, said here on Thursday that it was a mistake on the part of the party to deny ticket to the Hyderabad Youth Congress president, Sheelam Prabhakar, for the MCH elections.
``I admit that I had sent a note to the former legislator, M. Sashidhar Reddy, requesting him to give party ticket to the Hyderabad Youth Congress president as he had actively participated in several programmes, including power tariff agitation,'' the PCC chief noted, adding that Mr. Prabhakar deserved the ticket. But unfortunately he was denied ticket.
Turning to the district Youth Congress president, Akarapu Bhaskar Reddy, who also was denied party ticket in the elections, he said that ``we cannot give party ticket to all aspirants. Following the wave in favour of the Congress party in the MCH elections several persons had aspired for the ticket.
He said that he had given a free hand in six Assembly segments where the party leaders - P. Janardhan Reddy, M. Sashidhar Reddy, Mukesh, V. Hanumanth Rao, Nagender and Sudheer Kumar - had selected candidates.
To a question about dissidence, he pointed out: ''There is no Congress party without dissidence.``
He exuded confidence that the party would win the Hyderabad Mayor post as he had fielded an efficient candidate, Nagender. He found fault with the Government for reducing the reservations for the SCs.
He flayed the Government for allocating 11 wards out of 15 for women in the Secunderabad Assembly segment and restricting the quota in other segments.
He said the party had given tickets taking into consideration all equations. He had posted SCs in general seats and women in unreserved areas.
About power tariff hike issue Mr. Satyanarayana Rao threatened to launch an uncompromising agitational programme throughout the State if the Government encouraged an increase.
He pointed out that ''it is a fact that the World Bank is pressuring the State Government to increase the tariff and there is no presumption on the issue.``
He said that the State Government was purposely delaying the power tariff hike till April this year following elections to the municipal bodies.
Power tariff hike would be a burden on the lower and middle class sections of society. He reiterated that the Congress would launch a more intensified agitation. He welcomed the Government decision of inviting all political parties to discuss the power tariff.
He alleged that the AP Transco was incurring losses due to mismanagement by the authorities.
