Kiwis rock Aussie boat

MELBOURNE, JAN. 11. Pacemen Chris Cairns and Shane Bond bowled New Zealand to a 23-run victory over Australia in the opening match of the triangular limited-overs series on Friday despite defending a total of just 199.

Australia was scoring at seven runs an over at 63 for two and cruised to 98 for two in the 19th over before losing Ricky Ponting (45) and Michael Bevan (27) to the bowling of Bond (3-53) within the space of six runs.

Australia captain Steve Waugh was run out for 15 at 135 for five after a mix-up with Damien Martyn (24) before Chris Cairns (3-42) bowled Ian Harvey (5) and Brett Lee (0). The host side was eventually dismissed for 176 in 42 overs.

Earlier, all-rounder Chris Harris (63 not out) and spinner Daniel Vettori (30) produced a record eighth-wicket partnership for New Zealand in limited overs internationals against any country, adding 72 from 103 balls, to guide New Zealand to a respectable 199 for the loss of eight wickets.
