Nounidh Singh breaks hurdles record

CHENNAI, JAN. 11. Nounidh Singh Sekhon from Punjab set a new record in the 110m hurdles in the boys' under-20 category on the third day of the Inter-State Junior National athletics meet at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Friday. On the distaff side the distinction went to West Bengal's Sabita Mondal in under-18 class in javelin throw, followed by A.Vijila of Kerala and Crssina Maria of Karnataka in the 400 metres for under-16.

Nounidh Singh ran a splendid race to return a new time of 14.49s against the meet record of 15.04 held jointly by T.Sivabalan (TN) (14.8 hand time) from 1994 at Hyderabad, and P.Senthil Kumar (TN) (15.04s) last year in Bangalore.

A nephew of the stalwart hurdler, Gurbachan Singh Randawa, from whom Naunidh Singh had the honour of receiving the medal today, Naunidh is an undergraduate in Khalsa College, Amritsar. He won the gold in the last Inter-University at Kozhikode (14.37s). He is coached by his father, Harjit Singh, himself a no mean hurdler.

Sabita Mondal threw the javelin to a record distance of 37.44m bettering the existing mark of 36.89m held by Suman Devi of Uttar Pradesh at Salem in 2000.

A.Vijila of Kerala and Cressina Maria clocked 57.31s and 57.84s respectively against the best for the meet of H.M.Jyoti of Karnataka since 2000 meet at Salem.

R.Jayanthi (TN) (38.53 m), 2.Baljit Kaur (Pjb) (36.58 m), 3.Milli Sinha (Bih) (35.49m). Long Jump: 1.Nooshan Rajendran (TN) (5.85m), 2. Ponny George (Ker) (5.71m), 3.Sachita Monappa (Kar) (5.64m). 100m hurdles: 1.A.Kalyani (AP) (14.36 s), 2.K.N.Priya (TN) (14.60 s), 3.S.Bindu Sree Madhavi (AP) (14.66s). 400m: 1.
