Pandalam rape case; HC suspends RI

KOCHI, JAN. 11. The Kerala High Court on Friday suspended the sentences of rigorous imprisonment ranging from 11 years to seven years awarded by the Kottayam Special Court to the five accused in the Pandalam rape case.
Justice G. Sasidharan also ordered that they be granted bail on their executing a bond for Rs. 25,000 each with two solvent sureties to the like sum to the satisfaction of the special court.
As many as seven persons, including three college lecturers were convicted and sentenced to undergo imprisonment in the rape case. However, only five accused appealed today against the Special Court verdict.
Those who approached the High Court were C.M. Prakash, lecturer in the Department of Botany, NSS Hindu College, Pandalam, (third accused), Venugopal, a contractor, (Accused No.4), Jothish Kumar (Accused No.5), Manoj Kumar (Accused No 6) and Shah George (Accused No 7).
While Venugopal and Jothish Kumar were sentenced to 11 years' rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 25,000 each, other accused got seven years' RI and a fine of Rs. 10,000.
The prosecution case was that the accused had molested and raped a student of the NSS Hindu College.
The first accused, K. Venugopal, lecturer in the Department of English, NSS Hindu College, Pandalam, his colleague and second accused, B. Ravindranathan Pillai, were also sentenced to 11 years' rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 25,000.
