Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Kerala's plight

Sir, - By cutting a number of financial benefits and postponing the salary payment by two weeks of all Government employees, the Kerala Government has declared a state of financial emergency. People are aware that the State is on the verge of financial bankruptcy and expected some tough measures. But the Government has made its employees alone bear the cross which is invidious and fraught with serious consequences.

Austerity measures should cover the entire spectrum of Government activity beginning with the Ministers. The 20 per cent cut in salaries and the reduction in the number of phones for Ministers is only a red herring and they can and will compensate themselves through the umpteen number of other perks enjoyed by them.

The Chief Minister, A.K. Antony's suggestion that nothing is going to happen if the employees stay away for a month is unfortunate and smacks of a confrontational attitude towards the employees. No Government can function without the cooperation of its employees and instead of enlisting this, Mr. Antony is fanning discontentment.

M.K.B. Nambiar,

Mahe
