Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Time to act

Sir, - For a State which spends 70 per cent of revenue receipts on paying salaries and wages to its employees, the time has come for the Antony Government to act decisively. Around 70 per cent of the State PSUs are incurring losses and their capacity utilisation has fallen below 50 per cent. All these loss-making PSUs are given budgetary support just to protect the workers.

For the Government employees a cut in their salaries is a psychological trauma. Time has shown that they are no longer insulated from competition. There will never be job security through employment.

The trade unions and the Opposition parties, while being convinced that there is no hidden agenda at work, fail to come up with any rich thought. Everyone seems to externalise or rationalise failures and merely suggest yesterday's remedies for tomorrow's ills.

It is time the State Government and the employees crafted a new deal for themselves if they want to survive in this age of liberalisation and globalisation.
