Western Railway in final

MUMBAI, JAN. 13. Western Railway set up a title clash with Sports Authority of India, Chandigarh, in the Tommy Emmar All-India women's hockey gold cup, being played at the Mahindra stadium here.

Western, playing without six regulars who are attending the Indian senior camp, was still good enough to overcome Central Railway 1-0 in the first semifinal on Sunday.

Then SAI, Chandigarh, displaying fast, furious hockey which has endeared it to the local crowd, scored a 5-0 victory over SAI, Delhi in the second semifinal. The tournament is sponsored by Res Pinto and co-sponsored by Gas Authority of India.

Paulina Surin swept in a deflection, resulting off a 23rd minute penalty corner shot taken by Jyoti Dodrai, for Western's match-winner.

The winner was reduced to 10 players when Phulgancia B went off with a twisted ankle, but had no problems holding on to its lead despite missing six regulars.

The second match between the two SAI sides was a thriller all the way, the Chandigarh girls superior due to their defensive abilities. Of course, Saba Anjum and Nishi Chauhan (two goals) excelled in the role of playmakers running the length of the turf. Sushila Sharma played her heart out for the Delhi side, but the Chandigarh attackers were a class apart. The Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai (Maharashtra) has announced a Rs 5000 cash prize for the `Player of the Tournament', to be announced after the final on Monday.

The results: semifinals: Western Rly 1 (Paulina Surin) bt Central Rly; SAI, Chandigarh, 5 (Saba Anjum, Nishi Chauhan (2), Prakash Choudhary, Ashrita Toppo) bt SAI, Delhi 0.
