Titles for Shobana, Arun

THIRUVALLUR, JAN. 13. As expected two of the four titles at stake in the Rotary Club of Madras Central Tamil Nadu State under-12, 14 boys & girls chess championship, held at Jacob Matriculation School, were taken by Salem players.
L. Iswarya Shobana and S. Arun Prasad won the under-14 girls and boys titles. Shobana, a student of Cluny Matriculation School, is a former National under-12 girls champion. Her coach is M. Senthilvel. Arun Prasad, a student of Boston Matriculation School, is coached by his father T. Subramaniam.
Anjanaa N. Sowjanyaa of Kanchi District, who won the under-12 girls on Saturday with a round to spare, is a student of Modern School. Her coach is V. Ravichandran, the Kanchi District Secretary.
After messing up his chances in the previous two rounds, Aswin Jayaram of Chennai clinched the first prize in the under-12 boys category by beating Sa Kannan of Sivagangai.
Totally Rs. 30,000 was distributed as cash prize. The four champions additionally received the Dolphin Trophies. The first two in each category qualifies to represent Tamil Nadu in the forthcoming National Championship at Chennai from May 15 to 23.
The closing ceremony was well organised by the Correspondent of Jacob Matriculation School, Mr. James Jayaraj. Mr. S. Balaraman, secretary Thiruvallur District Chess Association, welcomed the gathering. Mr. D.V. Sundar, vice- president, All India Chess Federation presided over the meeting. Mr. A. Krishnaswamy, MP, Sriperumpudur constituency, Mr. P. Sivasankaran, IAS, Thiruvallur District Collector, and Rotary District governor rotarian R. Ganapathi promised to assist the TDCA.
