BEIJING JAN. 15. China today blasted a move by Taiwan's government to put the word Taiwan on its passports, saying any attempts to separate the island from the mainland is ``doomed to failure".

``Any attempt to separate Taiwan from the Chinese motherland in any form will be strongly opposed by the whole Chinese people,'' Taiwan compatriots included, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman ,Sun Yuxi, said.

``This attempt, should it develop in the direction of Taiwans independence, is doomed to failure,'' Mr. Sun told reporters at a regular news briefing.
