Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Right choice

Sir, - K.S. Alamgeer in his letter, `Avoid this precedent' (Jan. 14), has hurt the sentiments of women by stating that the Tamil Nadu Government should reconsider the appointment of the Chairperson of the Waqf Board. There has been a refreshing change in the Islamic world with Muslim women being allowed entry into some mosques. Besides, a reading of Islamic history will reveal that women had given discourses on Islamic theology. When this is acceptable, should the appointment of Bader Sayeed create such a furore?

Muslim women are highly appreciative of the appointment and expect a lot from her but once again Muslim chauvinists tend to block the march of progress. For a board in need of an efficient and honest chairperson, the Government has chosen the right person. One hopes that sense prevails and the Muslim community extends cooperation to Ms. Sayeed.

I. Nazneen,

Ramanathapuram, T.N.
