Opinion - Letters to the Editor

A friendly move

Sir, - If Pervez Musharraf's much-awaited address to his people could be translated into action, it could facilitate the de-escalation of tension between the countries of the subcontinent. Although he stopped short of complying with India's demands of handing over the leaders of the Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Jaish-e-Mohammed, his statement that the Government would henceforth refrain from abetting militancy in Kashmir could be viewed as being an India-friendly move.

Yet, as far as obliging India is concerned, it is `thus far and no more', but given the hitherto anti-India mindset of the Pakistani establishment, it is understandably so. However, by refusing to hand over the leaders of the LeT and the JeM and other terrorists wanted by India, the potential security risk to India still stands. Nevertheless, as the refusal comes with a pronouncement that `no individual or organisation would be allowed to indulge in acts of terrorism in the name of Kashmir', the responsibility for preventing future attacks similar to the attack on the J&K Assembly and the Parliament House falls on the Pakistan Government. With Gen. Musharraf showing clear signs of yielding a little to India's demands, it is up to Atal Behari Vajpayee to accept Gen. Musharraf's invitation for yet another bilateral dialogue.
