Advani's 'virtual meeting' with Cheney
By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JAN. 15. The Union Home Minister, L.K. Advani, who returned here after a six-day visit to the U.S., had a ``virtual meeting'' with the U.S. Vice-President, Dick Cheney.

Talking to reporters at his North Block office this evening, Mr. Advani said the U.S. Vice-President was not seen after the September 11 terrorist strikes and the prospect of a ``virtual meeting'' with him looked interesting.

While visiting the White House, Mr. Advani was taken to a conference room which had a huge television screen. The Vice-President spoke to him through the facility of teleconferencing and could see the members of the Indian delegation.

When the U.S. Ambassador in India, Robert Blackwill, made a remark, Mr. Cheney asked, ``How is he getting along in New Delhi?'', Mr. Advani said that he told the Vice-President that Mr. Blackwill was doing a fine job and serving the U.S. very well.

Mr. Advani said Mr. Cheney was apologetic about not being able to meet him in person. ``But I told him that meeting him in this manner had in fact made it unforgettable. This meeting will remain etched in my memory,'' he said.

During his visit, Mr. Advani also had meetings with the editorial boards of the New York Times, Washington Post and Washington Times.
