Left pulls out of delegations abroad
By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JAN. 15. The Left parties, CPI(M) and CPI, today said there was no need for the Government to send Parliamentary delegations abroad to mobilise international opinion on New Delhi's stand in the current India-Pakistan stand off.

The CPI(M) general secretary, Harkishan Singh Surjeet, told a news conference here that in his party's assessment ``there was no point in taking part'' in such an effort since the situation had changed after the speech of Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, last Saturday.

Mr. Surjeet said he had made the position clear during the all-party meet called by the Prime Minister on Sunday after the speech. ``We are not taking part in any delegation, what purpose would it serve to send delegations now. Even the Government has not come out with any comprehensive evaluation after Gen. Musharraf's speech.,''

The CPI(M) politburo member, Prakash Karat, said that even before Gen. Musharraf's address, the CPI(M) had decided not to take part in the delegations since there was no common brief. ``Our party is for demobilisation of troops and creating the atmosphere for deescalating tensions.''

The CPI, too, echoed similar views stating that the exercise to send Parliamentary teams was primarily meant to mobilise international opinion, which was now firming up.

The party's national secretary, D. Raja, said that after Saturday's speech even the Government had acknowledged its content while demanding implementation. ``The party does not think it is necessary sending delegations now'', he said.
