ABC qualifying: Nepal, India left in fray
KOLKATA, JAN. 15. India and Nepal are the only two countries in fray in the Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC) Middle Asia zonal qualifying championship beginning at the Sports Authority of India, Eastern Centre, here on Wednesday.
Punjab Police, which won the 18th Federation Cup in Jamshedpur on Monday, will represent India in the meet that is to identify the zonal qualifier for the Champions' Cup to be held at Kuala Lumpur from April 28 to May 5.
Sudden withdrawal of Bangladesh and non-arrival of Kazakhstan has put the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) in a real fix. The four-day meet had attracted confirmation from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and India. Till the end of the last week, only four teams, except Uzbekistan and Sri Lanka, had asked for hotel accommodation to be made.
The BFI president B.K. Saha, back in town after witnessing the final of the Federation Cup at Jamshedpur, informed The Hindu that Bangladesh expressed its inability to field a side because its National federation had been superseded by the government.
Kazakhstan, expected via New Delhi, has not communicated with the BFI in recent times though the Indian federation is expecting some information from that country by night. Mr. Saha said the meet had to go through with the two teams present here. As of today it has been decided to have a best of three matches between the representatives of Nepal and India with the winner going through to the main round in April- May.
The BFI indicated this evening should Kazakh team reach the city by night, the format of the tournament would undergo a change. The venue has been spruced up for the meet with all electronic gadget in place.
