Samaresh Jung clinches gold
By Kamesh Srinivasan
INDORE, JAN. 15. Samaresh Jung and Shilpi Singh asserted their supremacy by bagging the air pistol gold in the men's and women's sections respectively in the National shooting championship at the Reoti range here on Tuesday.
Having missed a medal in the National Games recently, Samaresh was thrilled to prove his worth with a 675.3, as he followed a 575 with a 100.3. He won the gold 3.8 points ahead of Umesh Chandra of Indo-Tibetan Border Police, after making the final with a two-point lead.
Samaresh had started his series with a 100, but rounds of 91, 98, 94, 96 and 96 cut short his hopes of putting up a record total. In the final, Samresh had a series of 10.2, 9.2, 9.6, 10.5, 9.6, 10.7, 10.3, 10.3, 9.8 and 10.1.
Vivek Singh took the bronze 0.3 points ahead of Gurpal Singh, who was fielded in the competition ahead of seniors in a bold move by the Army.
Jaspal Rana did not compete in the air pistol event, a rare experience for him, as he was not prepared to take his lane in the allotted detail. The efforts to have a teammate from Uttaranchal take the lane proved futile. Jaspal had won the National Games gold with a huge margin.
Shilpi Singh had missed the gold by a big margin to Sonika Mannon in the National Games, but was in her rhythm this day. She followed a 377, a three-point lead over Baljeet Kaur, with a 98.2 in the final. She won by a 3.5 point margin over the Army shooter.
Saroja Kumari jumped up from the fifth slot before the final, with a brilliant 10.8 last shot to take the bronze 0.6 points ahead of Sushma Rana (467.3) and Sonia Rana (465.1).
On Monday, Saroja Kumari had clinched the gold in the sport pistol event with a total of 659.2. The mother of two, who was winning her third gold, in the last five years in this event, was one point ahead of Sonia Rana of CISF at the end of the preliminary phase.
In the final, Sonia got ahead by 0.9 points after the first series of five shots, but had a 5.4 in the second series that put paid to her hopes of a gold.
Sushma Rana who had clinched the National Games gold with a National record 579, could muster only a 552 and finished fifth with a total of 647.1.
In the men's free rifle 3-position event, Bishnu Nag of Navy took the gold with a 2.2 point lead over Ashok Kumar of Army. Fariuddin Siddiqui of Army was threatening to move up from the fourth slot, but a crossfire with his sixth shot, pushed him to the seventh slot.
Abhijeet Konduskar, a third year Mechanical Engineering student from the University of Ohio, took the junior gold with a 1140.
