By Our Legal Correspondent
NEW DELHI, JAN. 16. The Supreme Court today directed the Uttar Pradesh Government to acquire the required land for construction of oxidation ponds on the banks of the Gomti in five towns of the State.
Hearing a public interest petition for a direction for making the river free of pollutants, a Bench comprising Justice G.B. Pattanaik and Justice R.P. Sethi gave three months time to the Government to acquire land in the towns of Sultanpur, Pilibhit, Jaunpur, Barabanki and Lakhimpur.
Counsel for the Central Pollution Control Board, submitted that despite earlier orders in this regard, the oxidation ponds were yet to be constructed and that untreated sewage was being discharged into the river.
The State Government counsel assured the court that the land required would be acquired within the stipulated time.
